Christmas Trees and Holiday Markets

Hello faithful market shoppers and supporters!

It’s that time again, when we can’t believe that the regular season is over and the holidays are upon us. Well, have no fear, your neighborhood market is here!

To help you and your family through the holidays, we are holding two Holiday Markets at the Gordon Square Arcade. Both are just before big holidays: our Falliday Market is Saturday November 19 and our HoliDaze Market is Saturday December 17, both are 10am-1pm.

For those of you who just have to have a real, cut Christmas tree, we are offering sustainably grown Christmas trees from Crall Farm in Bucyrus, Ohio. These are Balsam Firs and we have yet to have an unhappy customer. Please download an order form from here, or our facebook page, and send your order in to our post office box. You can also bring your orders to the Falliday Market on November 19.

Hello fellow eaters:

Although I had planned to elaborate on the joys and vicissitudes of pesto, two announcement-type items point to a couple of important things about the market, so I will just talk about them (there will be more garlic next week). Like many farmers’ markets, our market benefits from the donation of space for the market. Also like many farmers’ markets, our market functions as a sort of village green where one can catch up with folks not seen during the busy week, exchange information about what is going on in the neighborhood, meetings missed, weather complaints, etc. This Saturday is an opportunity to sit awhile and chat with your friends and neighbors while supporting the institution that gives us a place to set up shop. Bethany Presbyterian Church’s annual strawberry festival is Saturday from 12 to 4pm. Strawberries will be served with locally-made Weber’s ice cream and/or shortcake (2-4 inside the church). Sales benefit Bethany Presbyterian’s outreach programs. Long term patrons of the market have enjoyed the strawberry festival at the market each year. In years past I have found that I can eat strawberries and ice cream much earlier in the day than I would have thought with no ill effect. My strawberries were a bust this year, so I have been looking forward to this for two weeks.

The other announcement is that the first class of cooking class session two is this Saturday at 11. Now if someone were to come up to me on the street and say “cooking class,” the first thing that would pop into my mind is something heavy on technique and equipment, possibly based on the cuisine of a culture whose language that I do not read well or at all. But the cooking classes through the farmers’ market have more to do with ingredients, and specifically focus on Ohio produce–remember how I confessed (again!) that I did not know what swiss chard was until a few years ago and now have the zeal of a convert? Who knows, that veggie you never used before might change your life, too (and most ingredients will be available from vendors at the market). Lisa from Origins Beanery and This Urban Homestead will be leading the class.

EcoVillage Produce will have bib, leaf, and romaine lettuces; carrots; bunching onions; walking onions; yellow, purple, and bluelake beans; kohlrabi, and beets. In the greens department they will have turnip, swiss chard, kale, collard, mixed, and beet top. They will also have thyme, sage, sweet basil, dill, rosemary, peppermint, spearmint, lemon balm, chives, loveage, and parsley. They will also have goat cheese and live plants (separately, not together).

Old Husher apparently fell in. we’ll see if he is there.

Tinker’s Valley will have cabbage, collards, garlic, elephant garlic (leeks)
smooth jam (in raspberry and strawberry rhubarb). Also some potted plants will be available: basil (sweet genovese, thai, and compacto), parsley, and sage as well as bamboo stakes/poles. They may have some beans (pole and bush) and Squash (but they can’t make any promises just yet).

Devil’s Backbone did not check in, so cross your fingers.

Maggie’s Farm will have arugula, beet greens, swiss chard, lemon basil, lime basil, genovese basil, beets, lettuce, red onions, yellow squash, zucchini, russian kale, and curly kale.

MoBite Products will have vegan apple pie, black berry pie, sweet potato pie, carrot cake, spice cake, chocolate cake, cherry pie, roasted kale and zucchini muffins, gluten-free zucchini muffins, banana muffins, and falafel.

Earth’s Crust did not check in.

Origins Beanery did not send the specifics, but they know what would happen if they did not show…

Cathie Brenkus will not be at the market this week.

ReMemories will have “Sit-on-Its”, refurbished orphan chairs, at the market as well as her usual purses, totes, and cutting starters.

This week at the neighborhood table we have Carol with Sammy’s Bags. Sammy’s Bags offers recycled upholstery items, such as eyeglass cases, jewelry bags, and more.

This week we will have Yoga at the market. Yoga will go from 11-12 please plan to come about 15 minutes early to sign in. This is a donation based class. Please pay what you can and all donations will go to the GSFM. Our teacher this week is Sarah Perkins. Her vinyasa-based classes are focused on breath, strength, flexibility, balance, motion, and stillness – and are set to an eclectic mix of music.

Or, a you a part of a group or club that could help people in the neighborhood? The only cost to you would be a small percentage of your sales if you use the space to sell something. The only rule is that items for sale must fall within Market Guidelines. [EATER UPDATE] July 9, 2011

Hello fellow eaters:

I have been feeling like a certain je-ne-sais-quois is missing from the garden this year, and I had not been able to figure out what until it dawned on me that because of rather, ahem, frustrating weather in late May, my tomatoes are still so far away. And then I was a bit embarrassed for myself because of all of the things that are in good shape for eating in the garden right now. Because I have in the past few years come to take completely for granted some vegetables that I did not eat a lot of –or had not even heard of such as (gasp!) swiss chard–just a few years ago. I do not recollect my mother ever cooking greens; that is my excuse, like it or not. The good news of this suspiciously greens-less upbringing is that the situation can be easily addressed with resources readily available: Cleveland’s very robust community gardening program helped me overcome (some of) my vegetable ignorance and learn to love greens of all kinds (and I again thank the folks at OSU Extension Cuyahoga County for their dedication). And the farmers’ market can ensure that we have enough greens (salad and cooking) when our own gardens are insufficient to the task. So I do not want to show any disrespect to my tomato plants (in case they are listening), but I have been having great salads and cooked greens without their showy, red and yellow garden neighbors, so things are just fine thank you very much. In the mean time in the red department we have raspberries, beets, and red swiss chard coming in for real. And, gentle eater, I can practice hopeful optimism (not my strong suit, so practice is imperative) that the tomatoes will come.

EcoVillage Produce did not check in, but I am sure hoping they will be at the market.

Old Husher will be in full Alliumania this week with garlic, green onions, and baby onions. He will also have Mrs. Toke’s freshly dried oregano, which would be a bad joke if he were making it up. They will be some greens: probably kale, chard, and collards. Beets. Maybe some more peppers und perhaps a few paddy pans.

Devil’s Backbone will have herbs and some head lettuce, and maybe some radish.

Berry Good Farm will have honey, grains and jams. They will also have zucchini and applesauce breads and their famous-on-the-west-side “Lazy Daisy Oatmeal Cake”.

Mobite Products will have gluten-free banana and zucchini muffins, regular z muffins, carrot cake, chocolate cake, carrot pie, and blackberry pie.

Origins Beanery (formerly known as The Beanery @ Urban Homestead) will be bringing coffees from Guatemala, Costa Rica, & a limited amount from Yemen. We will also have a number of jars of various small batch fruit preserves from This Urban Homestead.

Cathie Brenkus will have towels and bracelets as regularly scheduled – fun summer patterns including fruits and flowers. This week she will have a free gift with any towel purchase.

This week Jesse Branch from the Imagine Foundation, a local Cleveland non-profit dedicated to ending child slavery worldwide (including right here in Cleveland) will be at the neighborhood table. Stop in and see what Jesse has to share.

Yoga at the market. Are you a Yoga instructor interested in donating your time to a good cause? The Gordon Square Farmers’ Market is looking for you! We are attempting to have as many Yoga at the Market classes as possible this season. We are looking for some Yogi’s who would like to teach a donation (to the market) based yoga class on a Saturday of their choice this market season. We would like for the classes to be around an hour long and for all levels. EATER UPDATE: Red Berries, White Onions & You!

Hello fellow eaters:

The thing that I most wanted to see on the Cleveland Garden Walk last
Saturday was the stone-and-cob pizza oven at a community garden in Hough. I
have to confess that when I first heard that a new community garden wanted
to build an outdoor pizza oven in their garden with no fence, I though that
it was a fairly crazy idea–not completely deranged like say, growing
tomatoes in Chile or even Florida and shipping them to Cleveland, gassing
them en route so they turn red–but very far outside of the box. Then I
heard that Elle Adams (who used to be such a dynamic member of OSU Extension
Cuyahoga County’s fabulous community gardening staff) was involved in that
garden and I thought, ok, maybe it is only a little bit crazy. Now I have
seen the oven working and twenty folks making pizzas, cooking pizzas, and
standing around checking out the oven, and I think the whole idea is not
just not crazy, but in fact just what the doctor ordered. In fact, I am
starting to think that lots of community gardens should have them. What
better way to bring gardeners and neighbors together than making pizzas in
the oven in the garden including vegetables just picked from the garden or
brought from the market where they were picked earlier that day? Talk about
eating well in the summer without heating up the kitchen! It is brilliant
and compelling, and it reminds me yet again that the more we try to do with
local food, the more will be possible. So thank you to Elle and Green
Triangle et al. for doing such a fabulous project and to Garden Walk
Cleveland for organizing a tour that allowed everyone to check out this and
other really great ideas.

p.s. I just helped make some of EcoVillage Produce’s Barbara Strauss’s
garlic scape pesto recipe, and if you did not get the recipe from her last
year, please consider doing so. Scape season in coming to an end, and that
pesto is, as the kids used to say, the bomb. Fear of garlic breath is for
people lacking the courage of their convictions.

EcoVillage Produce will be bringing romaine, bib, and leaf lettuces, greens
of several varieties (kale, mustard, collard, turnips, beet, and mixed),
snow peas, onions, rosemary, thyme, sage, chives, lavender,
peppermint/spearmint, and goat cheese. They will also have some plants to
sell: tomatoes, hot peppers, sweet peppers.

The old Husher will have beets, jalapenos(!), some kale and chard, green
onions, and he is not sure what else.

Devil’s Backbone will have head lettuce, herbs, carrots, chard, kale, and a
few surprises.

Mobite Products will have vegan carrot cake, vegan sliced bean pie, sweet
potato pie, vegan gluten-free banana nut muffins, vegan nut carrot muffins,
vegan sugar-free banana nut muffins.

Cathie Brenkus & the Towel Explosion is featuring patriotic towels!

Nicole McGee will be at the neighborhood table this weekend. She plans to do
an interactive craft with market guests. The majority of her for sale goods
are showcased at Collective Upcycle. Stop by the table and say hello to
Nicole.

This is the last Saturday to buy tickets for the Collective Upcycle baskets,
so buy some tickets, support the market, and get great stuff. And if you do
not win (or even if you do) go to the store and checkout the wonderful and
inventive goods made by Nicole and the other artisans.

The market is sponsoring some “cooking with local food” classes! This is a
really great opportunity to expand your cooking horizons (and get me new
recipes to try for the eater update). The dates are as follows series one:
Saturdays July 16, 23, and 30 at 11am at the market. Series two: Tuesdays
July 5, 12, and 19 at 6:30pm at Bethany Presbyterian. Series three:

This season’s Gordon Square Farmers’ market is shaping up to be the best one yet. June
18 was our opening day and there was an abundance of fresh vegetables, jellies, breads
and preserves on hand for the lucky eaters who came looking for fresh, local food.
We have cooking classes coming up. Sat. July 2, 9, 16 @ 11 a.m. & Tues. July 5, 12 &
19 and August 2, 9 & 16 @ 6:30 p.m. For more info, call 216.233.8300. Reservations

This year we are trying something new, and maybe you will too. Local yoga instructors

EATER UPDATE: Building Community through Plants & Food

Hello fellow eaters:

What a lovely day for opening day of the market. I was a last minute shopper
because of community garden duties, so I missed seeing several of you
regulars. I hope to make up for it this week but seeing more of you and
having a bit more time to spend catching up with everyone. I hope that this
Saturday we will have an even larger crowd since the Gordon Square Farmers’
Market is the Detroit-Shoreway HQ of the Cleveland Garden Walk. Regular
readers of the eater update might guess that I am not a frequent garden tour
attendee, and you would be correct. Gardening-wise, I am pretty focused on
things to eat, and everything else is an afterthought at best, so if I were
to I look at my yard and then think the words “garden tour” someone would
need to administer smelling salts. But I am pretty excited about this garden
walk because a) it seems to be less about showing off and more about putting
together a critical mass of folks who are interested in a community project
and b) the walk will also include community gardens as well as ReImagining
Cleveland projects on formerly vacant land. The various things that we
do–at least in part–to build community in our neighborhoods are very
important to my life as a city dweller and as someone who eats food, whether
that community building is in community gardens, farmers’ markets,
neighborhood school art shows, block clubs (and especially block club
potlucks), volunteering at and attending neighborhood festivals, or just
spending more time getting to know your neighbors (say, by offering extra
zucchini or cucumbers, ha!). As I have discussed in past eater updates (and
doubtless will again) community building is and will be part and parcel of
changing to more local and more sustainable food systems. And you will have
no better opportunity to see local community gardens, urban farms, rain
gardens (can you say sewer fees?!), and creative re-use of vacant land than
on the garden walk on Saturday. So expand your visual and geographic network
and get to know your community better by visiting spots on the garden
tour–whether for sightseeing, getting ideas for your home garden, or seeing
where some of your farmers’ market food comes from–by shopping at the
market, getting a walking program, and visiting some of your neighbors’ and
fellow Clevelanders’ gardening and farming projects.

Don’t forget, we are auctioning off three, count ‘em, 3 baskets of goodies
from the Collective Upcycle pop-up boutique. Buy your tickets at the Market
Booth this week and next and enter to win 1 of 3 baskets with amazing
handmade items from the Cleveland area. As a side note, Nicole McGee (who
organized Collective Upcycle) will be vending at the Market on July 2.

it’s not the weather, it’s family. We hope that Ruby’s Garden will be able
to join us soon.

walnut, and spicy ginger; several breads: 100% whole wheat sunflower, 100%
whole wheat walnut, deli rye, lemon mint yogurt, semolina with sesame seeds;
and rolls: onion–wild celery and cinnamon.

Origins Beanery (formerly known as The Beanery @ Urban Homestead) will be
serving up cold cups of joe, aka Sua Da (Vietnamese coffee) along with
freshly roasted coffee beans (they’ll even grind them for you). They also
may have more of their awesome strawberry chipotle preserves. Smoky, spicy
and sweet!

Cathie Brenkus will be rejoining us this week with her cleverly decorated
tea towels as well as beaded bracelets.

ReMemories is spending time with the grandkids but will be back in a few
weeks with an assortment of fabulously stylish textile items (purses, baby
quilts, et al.), cleverly decorated chairs, and homemade jams and jellies.

Sarah Perkins will be at the neighborhood table this week.She will be
selling handmade gift bows (made from recycled materials) and eye pillows to
raise money as part of Off the Mat, Into the World’s Global Seva Challenge
2011: Haiti. All proceeds go toward her goal of raising $20,000 to help
create sustainable solutions for Haiti.

Eater Update: 6.16.11 OPENING DAY

Hello fellow eaters:  

It is great pleasure that I welcome you all to the fourth season of the Gordon Square Farmers’ Market–with a bit of last minute breathlessness, in fact, because the market is starting two weeks earlier than past years, so it snuck up on your loyal corespondent like a groundhog in the tomatoes.  I hope that all of you market patrons have made it through the long months of eating without the market, and are looking forward to eating some fresh lettuce with those remaining pickled beets (I know I still owe a recipe for dilly broccoli).   It was a chilly, wet spring, but fortunately our industrious growers braved the elements with faith that the sun would come out, and it did.  Those of you who made it to the plant sale last month know that you can expect good things this week and every Saturday through October.

Two special announcements:  Collective Upcycle, the improved re-use arts and crafts pop-up  store (on Detroit at W. 67th) has donated a few items for a raffle at the market this week, so take a stroll over and check them out.  

Next Saturday, the 25th, is the first annual Garden Walk Cleveland and Detroit-Shoreway is one of the featured neighborhoods.  The GSFM will have the official maps for this self-guided garden tour, which includes private gardens, community gardens, market gardens and urban farms, and Re-imagining Cleveland projects.  You will be able to really see where some of your local produce comes from.  

I am not sure what everyone will have because it is the first week, and we are still working out the kinks (and probably will be all season)!

Detroit-Shoreway’s own EcoVillage Produce will be the market with greens, lettuces, peas and more.  

Old Husher will be there with Garlic Scapes, Mint, Cilantro, Lettuces, Kale.

Ruby’s Garden will have cabbage, bok choy, lettuce, and maybe raspberries (holy cow!).

Origins Beanery had better be at the market or there might be a riot.  I have been out of coffee for more than a week and I did not want to buy any until I could get it from them. (They will be and they had this to say-Ed.): “…for coffee this week, we’ll be bringing a good bit from Brazil, Guatemala (Providencia Dos), Costa Rica, and Papua New Guinea and a limited amount from Kenya (my favorite at the moment). Prices have gone up slightly to reflect this change, but this basically just functions as a bottle deposit as we will be giving a $.50 discount on the smalls and a $1.00 discount on the larges when you return with the bottles to get them refilled. look out for the strawberry preserves!”

Le Jardin Lakewood artist Aubrey Evans makes purses  out of  all  vintage materials. Different styles of earrings . Leather bracelets w/ vintage pins, buttons, bottle caps.  Antique windows with decorative  glass beads on them (like stained glass).

Yoga at the Market.  Are you a Yoga instructor interested in donating your time to a good cause?  The Gordon Square Farmers’ Market is looking for you!  We are attempting to have as many Yoga at the Market classes as possible this season. We are looking for some Yogi’s who would like to teach a donation (to the market) based yoga class on a Saturday of their choice this market season. We would like for the classes to be around an hour long and for all levels. NEIGHBORHOOD TABLE
Do you have a special talent you would like to share? Are you an excellent baker? Do you make  wonderful jewelry? Or, a you a part  of a group or club that could help people in the neighborhood? If you answered yes to any of these questions, a Saturday at the Gordon Square Farmers Market Neighborhood Table is just what you need!
Here is how it works. The market runs from 10:00am-2:00pm on Saturdays during Market Season and is held at Bethany Presbyterian Church at 6415 West Clinton Cleveland, Ohio. The market will provide a table, chairs and a tent for your use. You can come as early as 9am to set up your space as needed. The best part of all this is it is totally free! The only “cost” to you would be a small percentage of your sales if you use the space to sell something. The only “rule” is that items for sale must fall within Market Guidelines. FARMER DAN, TINKERS VALLEY FARM will be selling Bamboo stakes & poles. Here is the list of plants: Collards,Broccoli, Cauliflower, cabbage (early,late dutch,red ) maybe a few other varieties .

Herbs  : Parsley (flat and curly) Sage, cilantro, Rosemary, Tarragon , Basil (genovese, Thia , Pistou ) . The last basil is for growing in containers.
